What is pink ivory wood?
Pink Ivory is an extremely rare and valuable African hardwood, renowned for its striking pink to reddish hues and exceptional density. Historically, the vibrant heartwood was considered sacred and reserved exclusively for Zulu royalty.
- Appearance: The heartwood color ranges from a pale brownish pink to a bright, vibrant, and highly prized neon pink or deep red. The color can deepen and become richer with age. The grain is typically straight to interlocked with a fine, even texture and a natural luster that can be polished to a glass-like finish.
- Durability: It is rated as durable to very durable regarding decay and insect resistance, and is surprisingly tough and resistant to water and fire.
- Hardness: Pink Ivory is extremely hard, strong, and stiff, with a Janka hardness of 3,230 lbf (pounds of force), making it one of the hardest woods in the world.
Pink Ivory is native to Southern Africa, primarily found in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Northern Botswana. The tree is slow-growing, often taking hundreds of years to mature. This limited availability, coupled with a low yield of defect-free, vibrant pink heartwood, makes it one of the most expensive and sought-after exotic woods globally, sometimes referred to as "rarer than diamonds".
